WHO WE ARE

HOD Interpreting, LLC is a values-driven American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting agency based in Baltimore, Maryland, dedicated to advancing communication equity across a wide range of settings. Founded by James Tyson-Channer, a seasoned interpreter and advocate for inclusive communication, HOD Interpreting was established to meet a growing need for culturally competent, high-quality language access services throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

We specialize in ASL interpreting, Cued Language transliteration, and CART captioning, with experience serving clients in education, government, healthcare, arts and culture, including large-scale public events. From city council meetings and press conferences to Pride festivals and academic panels, HOD Interpreting ensures that every event is accessible and every voice is included.
What sets HOD Interpreting apart is our holistic approach.

We believe accessibility is a foundation — not an afterthought — and our team takes pride in offering services that are professionally sound, community-centered, and responsive to real-world needs. Our interpreters and coordinators are carefully selected for their expertise, professionalism, and understanding of the diverse communities we serve.

As a Baltimore-based agency, we are deeply connected to the region and committed to strengthening local partnerships. We understand the importance of responsive communication, thoughtful planning, and seamless coordination — especially when access needs are time-sensitive or high-profile.

Our mission is rooted in integrity, access, and service. We provide more than just interpretation; we provide a commitment to ensuring that Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals are fully included in public life, without compromise. Whether we are working with government agencies, community organizations, or cultural institutions, our goal is the same: to deliver interpreting and consulting services that elevate the standard for accessibility.

As HOD Interpreting continues to grow, we remain committed to being a trusted partner and a leading agency in the field — delivering excellence, every time.

ABOUT OUR FOUNDER, JAMES TYSON-CHANNER

Born in Miami, Florida, James Tyson-Channer’s journey has been marked by resilience, transformation, and a steadfast commitment to language access. At the age of three, James was placed into the foster care system due to unconventional circumstances. His life took a pivotal turn at twelve when he was adopted into a loving family and relocated to Maryland — a transition that opened doors to opportunity and personal growth.

James discovered his passion for sign language early in life, leading him to pursue a career rooted in communication equity. He is continuing his studies at Gallaudet University, where he is pursuing a double major in Deaf Studies and Business Administration with a focus on entrepreneurship.

Professionally, James has worked as a lead interpreter in educational settings for nearly 11 years, and has also served in various roles including designated interpreter, Cued Language Transliterator (CLT), and professional development coordinator. His work reflects a deep understanding of both the technical and cultural dimensions of interpreting.

In addition to his work in language access, James has a deep passion for pageantry. As a former competitor himself, he has graced the stage in multiple systems and titles, bringing both artistry and advocacy into his performances. His experience as a contestant informs his leadership and vision behind the scenes. He is the former Director of the Miss Gay Arlington Pageant and currently serves as the owner and promoter of Miss Gay Mid Atlantic America, a direct preliminary in the esteemed Miss Gay America pageant system.

James is also a proud member of the National Alliance of Black Interpreters, DC Chapter (NAOBI-DC), and the Equality Chamber of Commerce. He has served in leadership roles on several community boards, including as the Community Engagement Officer for Equality NOVA.
Through his leadership at HOD Interpreting and his commitment to creative expression and accessibility, James continues to blend passion, professionalism, and purpose — building a legacy of access, advocacy, and excellence.
